The movie Labyrinth was made in 1986, and starred David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. It is a
fantasy film supposedly for kids, but all ages can enjoy it.
Bowie plays Jareth the Goblin King. Connelly portrays Sarah, a young girl stuck in her own
worlds of fantasy into which she retreats to escape from reality. Sarah is obsessed with a play
entitled Labyrinth, and has memorized all of it, except for a certain pesky line that she just can't
seem to remember.
She is annoyed when her father and stepmother go out for the night and leave her to baby-sit her
baby brother Toby. So she wishes the goblins would come and take him away. Unforunately for
Sarah and Toby, but fortunately for us audience members, they do.
Although Jareth the Goblin King offers Sarah her dreams, she refuses them in order to save her
brother. Jareth gives her 13 hours to make her way through his labyrinth. If she fails her brother
will become a goblin forever.
Sarah meets many cute and awesome creatures along the way. These creatures include Hoggle, a
slightly cowardly/stingy dwarf, Sir Didymus a valiant fox-dog who is a true knight and even has
his own loyal (if rather cowardly) steed, Ambrosius, who just happens to be an identical twin of
her English sheep dog Merlin. There's also Ludo, a big hairy monster with a heart of gold and
friend to rocks, the weird, whacky, nutzy Fireys, the poor dumb goblins (I happen to feel a little
sorry for some of them who have such low IQ's), and many other characters.
This movie is totally cool and a must see. It has songs written and sung by David Bowie, who
manages to make every one of the lovely songs memorable. I mean, who can forget 'As the World
Falls Down'??
Besides all that, Bowie is unforgettable as the Goblin King and no one could have done it even half a well. And
whatever you do, don't suggest otherwise to the Labyrinth List members. :)
